How To Choose The Right RCBO Types

Selecting the right RCBO types is crucial for ensuring the safety and optimal performance of the EV charger. Proper sizing according to the application and equipment is essential, and it’s important to ensure that the rated current of the RCBO exceeds or matches the total current of all connected conductors.

An RCBO’s overcurrent characteristic is determined by its class- A, B, or C. Class A RCBOs are ideal for low-level overcurrent protection, while class B is designed for medium-level overcurrents and class C is intended for high-level overcurrents.

A-Type RCBO B curve is the most common RCBO type for use with electric vehicle chargers and is encouraged by various standards and guidelines from electrical safety boards.

RCBO Consumer Unit Technology

Ensure the safety of the electrical unit with a residual current circuit breaker. This essential device detects any electrical current flowing to the ground wire and instantly cuts off the circuit, preventing the risk of electric shock or electrocution.

Unlike a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) that only detects current overloads, a residual current device (RCD) can identify current leakages, while a residual current circuit breaker with overcurrent protection (RCBO protection), can effectively detect both.

Invest in the right protection for the home or workplace to prevent electrical accidents and safeguard components.

Frequently Asked Question

In residential settings, the typical range for RCBO household use is usually 30-100mA. A 30mA sensitivity can lead to occasional tripping without any visible fault. Most households are equipped with 60 mA and 100mA RCCBs to strike a balance between detecting no apparent fault and a genuine fault.

Single pole devices (SP), including those with a switched neutral, are equipped with overcurrent protection only on the line side of the device. Double pole devices (DP), such as RCCBs and a DP RCBO consumer unit, have overcurrent protection on both the line and the neutral.

Residual current-operated circuit-breakers with integral overcurrent protection for household and similar uses (RCBOs) are covered in the standard BS EN 61009-1:2012.
